This page measures inflation in India using the India Consumer Price Index, which tracks the changing cost of a basket of goods and services bought by households. The figures come from India's national statistics, compiled via the OECD and published on FRED, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis data service. All values here are in Indian rupees (₹).

Adjusting an amount by this index answers a single question: how much purchasing power a sum of rupees from one year holds in a later year. ₹1,000 saved in 1980 did not buy the same groceries decades later, and the index puts a number on that gap. The data runs from January 1957 through March 2025, and each page states the date the figures run through.

Over six decades the compounding is large: amounts from the 1970s or 1980s convert into many times their face value in recent-year rupees. The pages below give the exact figure for any starting year and amount, with a year-by-year table showing how the index moved. These are inflation adjustments only, not investment returns or currency conversions.
