Details and important caveats
Every line starts at the same amount on your chosen date, so the chart shows how each one grew in U.S. dollars. The S&P 500 and crypto are price series; gold and silver are the metal in dollars. The inflation line (U.S. CPI) is the honest benchmark: anything above it gained in real terms. When a series is younger than your start date, the period adjusts automatically, with a note.
An exchange rate is not a return: each currency is the value of one unit against the dollar, not a yield — cash earns no interest. Nothing here is a recommendation.
